CrossFit

CrossFit is defined as Constantly Varied, Function Movements, Performed at a High Intensity. CrossFit encompasses movements from all areas of fitness including: calisthenics, powerlifting, olympic weightlifting and gymnastics, and athletes perform these movements at the highest level of intensity that is safe for their ability.

CrossFit did NOT invent any movements… It simply combines all of the movements in fitness and athletes perform them as quickly as possible for an amazing strength and conditioning workout!

The Goal

The goal of CrossFit is defined to Achieve an Increased Work Capacity, Across Broad Time and Modal Domains. “Work” is defined as mass moving through space. “Work capacity” is the ability one has to move mass through space, either measured in speed or by load.

If two athletes that both weigh 200 pounds run 1 mile (5,280 feet) there is a measurable amount of work being done, and each athlete is doing the same amount. If it takes one athlete 10 minutes and the other 7 minutes, the second athlete has a better work capacity within that domain (running 1 mile). If both of these athletes are put on a barbell that weighs 150 pounds and have 1 minute to perform Deadlifts, each rep is the same amount of work. If one performs 20 lifts and the other performs 30 lifts, the athlete who performed 30 lifts has a higher work capacity in this domain (Deadlifts at 150 lbs for 60 seconds).

So, the goal of CrossFit is to be able to perform work in any domain, or any situation. If a CrossFitter is put on a track, they’ll run. If they’re put on a barbell, they’ll lift. If they’re put on a rig, they’ll move themselves. A CrossFitter will be able to do work in any variety of circumstances.

Effects of Doing CrossFit

By changing your mindset from traditional motivational reasons for exercise to simply “I want to get good at CrossFit” you will miraculously see all areas of fitness come into focus. Focus on getting better at Burpees and make getting a Pull-Up a priority, and body composition will have to improve. Set a goal of hitting a Back Squat PR (personal best) and your strength and muscle mass will improve. Set a goal to learn how to Squat Snatch, and your mobility will improve.

By simply dedicating yourself to get good at CrossFit, you will learn about every facet of wellness and your body will transform into a lean, capable, work machine!

CrossFit is for Absolutely Everyone!

There are progressions for every movement that can be safely performed by athletes of all ages and levels. In a class with Back Squats, one athlete may Squat 400 pounds, while another does 300 pounds, and another is working on body positioning without weight. In a gymnastics class, one athlete may perform Pull-Ups, while another performs a band-assisted modification, and another performs a ring-row assisted modification.

It is the job of our staff to make sure every athlete, of any age and ability, can get a great, safe workout, with intensity that is appropriate for them!
